El Gatito - Cabo Rojo

It's been almost 20 years since I visited this place. Wow!! Better than I remember.!!! We had tostones and sorrullitos as an appetizer. They were perfectly done. Lobster, crab meat and beef empanadillas. Fantastic! Great service. Cold drinks. A must visit if you are in Joyuda.

Nice spot for quick food and drinks after the beach. A lot of yummy fried food but they have cooked plates too. Service is slow. Casual beach town ambiance. They have a room with AC as well as one next to the canal.

We are tourists staying nearby and returning from a beach day early in the evening. We were seated and served very quickly by our amiable server, who told us he has worked for 19 years in this restaurant, and the establishment itself has been in business for about 40 years. The decor is indicative of their seafood specialties, with many mounts of gamefish and printed fish motifs in their table surfaces. However, I ordered a medium done churrasco steak and it was excellent. I also had their pana (breadfruit) tostones as one of my side dishes and they had been freshly done and were perfect, crunchy in the outside, and tender inside. My sweetheart enjoyed the mero(grouper) fillet stuffed with shrimp/onions/green peppers and a garlic sauce. She had it with a side of Trifongo, also delicious. We both had parcha (passion fruit) mojitos and fried cheese balls for appetizers. My only complaint was the over sweetened mojitos which also were weak in the amount of rum in them, which made them more of a juice punch than real cocktails.

The shrimp al ajillo con arroz blanco was so flavorful. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. The service was friendly and quick. The place has AC which is needed but it blew right where our table and a few others were. The waitress said what I was already thinking- eat quick before the food gets cold. While I enjoyed the main dish the tostones did get cold, so that sucked.

Good food and very good service and prices. Pistachio flan is to die for. Service was excellent.
